Why Abuja property is held for a term of years, not forever.
Listings sometimes say “freehold”, but under the Land Use Act the strongest interest a private person can hold is a statutory right of occupancy for a fixed term. In the FCT that term is normally 99 years.
When you buy a house or plot, you take over the remaining years on the grant. A title granted in 1995 has fewer years left than one granted in 2015, though grants can usually be renewed.
