Formal notice from a landlord that a tenancy is ending.
A landlord who wants a tenant to leave must serve a valid notice to quit. The length of notice depends on the type of tenancy and the law that applies, and a yearly tenancy needs longer notice than a monthly one.
If the tenant does not leave when the notice expires, the landlord serves a notice of intention to recover possession and then goes to court. Self-help evictions such as changing locks are not lawful.
