Renting

Tenancy agreement

Also called Lease agreement

The contract that sets out rent, length of stay and the duties of landlord and tenant.

A written tenancy agreement records the rent, how long the tenancy lasts, what the tenant can and cannot do, who repairs what, and how either side ends it.

In Abuja, rent is usually paid yearly in advance, sometimes for two years at once. The agreement should say what happens to that advance if the tenancy ends early.

What to check

  • Confirm the landlord owns the property or is authorised to let it.
  • Get receipts for rent, Caution deposit and fees.
  • Agree the Service charge in writing.
